Tanzania set to become 'logistics hub' for LNG industry

Posted on : Friday, 24th July 2015

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has said that ongoing infrastructure work in Tanzania will see the country become a hub within the global LNG industry

A report by the professional services firm said Tanzania could become a leading exporter of liquefied natural gas by 2025, supplying markets such as Pakistan, Spain, Chile and China.

With transport and utilities infrastructure projects worth US$19bn already in the pipeline, the country also has plans in place to construct a new port at Bagamoyo, 75 km north of Dar es Salaam in a project with China Merchants Holdings (International) worth more than US$10bn.

Once it becomes operational in 2017, the new port will include a special economic zone (EPZ) and railway network, and will be capable of handling 20 times more cargo than the current port in Dar es Salaam can.

With US$14bn worth of rail projects currently in development, the report added, Tanzania's rail network will include new links to Zambia, Malawi, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda and DR Congo, while a domestic US$2.7bn project will see the construction of a new railway line between Tanga to Musoma.
